Decentralized congestion-aware platoon formation

Truck platooning has great potential in reducing energy consumption enabled by cooperative vehicle systems. Coordinating travel plans of trucks can actively form truck platoons via adapting departure time, route and speed. Current work focused on centralized coordination that is computationally expensive and entails logistics companies sharing business-sensitive information to potential competitors. Congestion in network is often ignored, which may jeopardize the platoon formation opportunities when facing real-world traffic.

The thesis will develop congestion-aware, privacy-preserving and decentralized algorithms for truck platoon formation in a large networks. The developed algorithms could be tested in a realistic logistic network.

The project is in collaboration with Meng Wang from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences


A self-motivated student with a strong background system design, linear algebra and statistical signal processing. Previous experience distributed algorithms and truck platooning is an added plus. Advanced coding skills in MATLAB and Python (or R) is required. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English is mandatory. The expected project duration is 32 weeks.
