MSc thesis project proposal

Watching TV Together; Filtering/Removing TV background signal during VOIP calling

This project aims to facilitate the process of connecting lonely people by watching TV together from various locations. Watching TV together will give an experience of the feeling that someone is sitting next to them on the couch. Reducing or preventing loneliness and creating togetherness and/or even a sense of cosiness will have a positive effect on people’s well-being. The experience of being together will be realised by using hands-free (loudspeaker) VOIP calling at both locations. One problem that immediately arises is that the background (TV) sound at the remote destination is not synchronized with the sound signal received at the listeners location. The goal of the project is, therefore, to filter out the background TV signal while keeping the desired speech signal undistorted. The algorithm will be implemented in the firm/software of a so-called TellyTalker. The programming of The TellyTalker itself is not part the project.

Additional features
  • People only have to put the TellyTalker on the table that offers a hands-free function and that they can sit up to 1.5 to 2 meters away from The TellyTalker.
  • Possibility of conference calls with more than two people.
Program Language
Python and/or C (final decision still has to be made by the programmer)
